Volunteer Development

South Thames College Volunteers

South Thames College has launched a campaign called Pride in Your College which gives young people the opportunity to volunteer in the community to improve their skills and employability. The College is looking for new volunteering activities that their students can assist with and they are ready for a challenge.

Previous and current voluntary projects include painting nurseries, assisting at charity events, acting as mentors to primary school children in the borough and digging up and relaying gardens at schools.

Baroness Sharp of Guilford endorsed the scheme saying "Wandsworth's Pride in Your College Campaign is a splendid example of how a further education college can contribute to the welfare of its local community."

If you have a project that South Thames College can help you with please contact Andrew Beardall on 020 8918 (7078) or (7069).

Is your organisation looking for Volunteers?

If your organisation is looking for volunteers, we are able to promote your volunteering opportunities through the Do-It website.  Potential volunteers looking online will then contact your organisation directly saving time for both you and the volunteers.  To promote your volunteering opportunities your organisation must be registered with Lifetimes.

Are you registered with us? If not please complete a registration form and send this along with the Volunteer Opportunity Registration Form to info@life-times.org.uk

Please consider...

Asking for volunteers but not responding to them immediately or not having a method to immediately place them into the volunteer programme is like advertising a product that does not exist. This could jeopardise attempts to recruit new volunteers and affect the reputation of your organisation.

If you change any of the details of your opportunity please let us know so we can make changes to the opportunities online. Any changes you wish to make should be sent to Andrew at info@life-times.org.uk

Decrease in Formal Volunteering - Increase in Informal Volunteering

New government figures show that formal volunteering (of people who volunteer at least once a year) has fallen to its lowest level in ten years.

16,000 people were surveyed from England and Wales as part of the Communities and Local Government's Citizenship Survey 2011.  The results showed that 39% of adults had volunteered at least once in the last year - its lowest level since 2011 and down from 40% last year.

Formal volunteering is classed as giving unpaid help to clubs, associations or organisations that benefit others or the environment.

Informal volunteering (giving unpaid help as an individual to people who are not relatives) on the other hand has increased to 55%.  Up one per cent from last year.

Little increase in volunteering as a result of Big Society?

The Directory of Social Change recently conducted a survey with 500 organisations which reveals that many charities in the UK believe there has been very little increase in volunteering as a result of the Big Society Agenda.

Only 5% of respondents felt that volunteering had increased as a result of the Big Society.
