South Thames College Volunteers

South Thames College has launched a campaign called Pride in Your College which gives young people the opportunity to volunteer in the community to improve their skills and employability. The College is looking for new volunteering activities that their students can assist with and they are ready for a challenge.

Previous and current voluntary projects include painting nurseries, assisting at charity events, acting as mentors to primary school children in the borough and digging up and relaying gardens at schools.

Baroness Sharp of Guilford endorsed the scheme saying "Wandsworth's Pride in Your College Campaign is a splendid example of how a further education college can contribute to the welfare of its local community."

If you have a project that South Thames College can help you with please contact Andrew Beardall on 020 8918 (7078) or (7069).

As part of a Warmer Homes Healthy People project Wandsworth Council are able to offer some free training for front line staff and members of voluntary and charitable organisations to recognise the signs of fuel poverty and be able to give practical advice to help clients and service users in their homes to reduce fuel bills and stay warmer and healthier in the cold weather.

Cold weather and homes make a significant contribution to excess winter deaths, in addition to factors such as damp and condensation affecting people’s health.  These training sessions will help those visiting vulnerable people in their homes identify the signs of fuel poverty and where to refer people that are affected.

There are four half day sessions available on a first come first served basis. The dates are:

Friday 16 March 9:30 to 13:00
Friday 16 March 13:45 to 17:00
Thursday 29 March 9:30 to 13:00
Thursday 29 March 13:45 to 17:00.

The training will take place in the Town Hall Wandsworth, the room number and place will be confirmed when you are booked on. Please email fsibson@wandsworth.gov.uk to book a place or for further information.

Our free Mentoring Service is for carers and former carers living in the London boroughs of Merton, Lambeth, Wandsworth and Sutton aged 60 and over who are caring or have cared for an older person, adult or child with physical or learning disabilities or adults with mental health issues.  We look to match up individuals with a volunteer to offer support and mentoring as required.

We can offer practical support such as form filling, phonecalls or information finding, as well as emotional support such as companionship and a chat over a cup of tea. We have been funded by Comic Relief for the the next two years to work specifically with hard to reach communities such as Refugees and Asylum seekers, Black and Ethnic Minorities and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender people. It is our hope that we will be able to recruit and match individuals with volunteers from the same communities.

We have found that most people in hard to reach communities care as a cultural or social expectation and do not label themselves as carers and are thereby unwilling to take up services that might be available to them. This is why our main goal is to provide support and mentoring to those who are in need of outside assistance but may be reluctant to reach out  and perhaps may not consider themselves  as carers even though they may have cared or are caring for a friend, relative or neighbour.

If you think this project may be relevant to you and you would like more information, please contact Debbie Robertson-Neil on 020 8648 9677.
