The Community Accountancy project is part of the Voluntary Sector Development department (VSD) within WVSDA. Management committees, Trustees, and coordinators of small voluntary organisations often find it daunting to comprehend financial information and sometimes rely on auditors and accountants to handle this part of their business. Prohibitive costs and intimidation through language used by these professionals can add to confusion and lead to voluntary organisations feeling unable to cope or be proactive in financial matters. This can sometimes result in cashflow and deficit problems and worse, to the insolvency of an organisation. The community accountant aims to demystify the financial language and process for an organisation and to build confidence and set up systems to empower organisations in this area. Assistance is given through one to one appointments, group training sessions, bespoke training for individual organisations, factsheets, and through telephone and email advice. All aspects of financial management are covered, from basic petty cash systems, PAYE, through to the preparation of final accounts. Preparing budgets for your organisation or funding application can be difficult and the community accountant is able to assist with this work. In today's climate of strong competition for existing funding it is not only service delivery that counts. Demonstration of good financial management can influence a funder's decision and it is important that voluntary organisations of all sizes recognise this and ensure that finances are well kept and relevant financial policies are adopted.
